Mark Hogancamp is a young man who lives in his hometown of Kingston, New York with dreams that one day, he become a successful artist.

One night in 2000, Mark is confronted by a group of five men at a bar who ask him what he does for a living. Mark misjudgingly says he does cross-dressing before he decides to head home for the evening. Upon leaving the bar, the men, revealed to be white supremacists, attack Mark by rendering him unconscious when one of them hits him over the head with a glass bottle as they proceed to beat him up until the police arrive, arrest the supermacists and rescue Mark by getting him to a hospital.

After Mark comes out of his coma, he is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, memory loss and is bound to a wheelchair until he can walk again. During his time at the hospital, he makes friends with Julie, an African-American social worker who helps him to learn how to walk again until he is discharged from the hospital.

Mark is still haunted by nightmares of his experience and, to ease his trauma, he decides to build a miniature village with custom Barbie dolls inspired by his friends, enemies and himself while having it as a WWIItheme for his characters. After naming the village "Marwencol" or "Marwen" for short, Mark becomes famous as he is able to photograph his village in action and opens an art gallery to the public, skyrocketing him to success.

As time passes, Mark begins to fantasize that the village is communicating with him that also has his doll counterpart Cap’n Hogie urging him to stand up to his fear. A few days later, Mark is called to testify against his assulters who have been put on trial for first degree battery. Mark is able to deliver an inspiring monologue before the supermacists receive prison sentences for their crime against him, satisfying Mark. Later on, Mark continues his career as a photographer.
